BACKGROUND
The Dog of Flanders is a wonderful story about a boy and his
dog. The story takes place in the 19th Century of Belgium.
Nello who is a boy with great talent in art. He has the
ability to draw beautiful scenery and people. The only
problem is that, Nello is a very poor kid and his parents have
pasted away. So instead of spending his time perfecting
and selling his work, he has to work very hard everyday on the
farm with his grandfather and his beloved dog Patrash.
This is a great movie about determination, friendship, and self
discovery.
Dog of Flanders was originally a novel by Oui'da.
And this novel have captivated many people world wide for more
than 130 years. In fact the popularity of this novel led
the local Belgian Government of Flanders to dedicate a statue of
Nello and Patrash in 1985. Immortalizing their devotion to
each other.
Dog of Flanders was also made into a live movie recently.
So you can watch the anime or the real movie. The two are
a little bit different.
REVIEW
The
Dog of Flanders is a wonderful movie. But it depends on
your taste. If your into the movies w/ cursing, gore, sex,
etc then your out of luck. This is a "Family"
anime. You can say the Dog of Flanders is like Grave
of the Fireflies. Only a bit more childish and with
computer animation added.
I really liked this anime because it made me feel for the
characters, and the anime was very touching (and no I am not a
sissy). The animation style is somewhat similar to
Miyazaki's art and the music is very soft. The only bad
thing (some consider it good) about this anime is that - It was
WAY too sad!!!!! Just as bad if not worst than Grave of
the Fireflies. And it doesn't have much of a re-watchable
factor. It's one of those anime you watch, love, then toss
into your stash of anime. But aside from that this
anime is a masterpiece!
Side note: FYI, I chose to review this anime because it
did not get as much credit and hype as it deserves. Not
many people have heard of this anime let along watched it.
So I hope this review might encourage some of you to check it
out. It truely is a masterpiece!
