These are the ratings we use to categorize the anime we shown. The titles listed not only fit into those categories but are used as a guide to determine what other titles would fit in a specific category.

These are the guidelines that will be applied to rating the anime to be shown. These guidelines will be in the newsletter and any viewer may inquire why any anime was rated the way it was. There will be a statement before any anime is shown telling which rating it recieved and why. These ratings will be implemented so that parents and students may decide beforehand which anime they think they'd like to watch.

G	G shall describe anime aimed towards a younger audience.  This will encompass most of “Shoujo” (Girls) anime and anime suitable for all ages.  The themes dealt with will generally be light-hearted, but not always (i.e. Kiki’s Delivery Service was a more serious anime, however still a G rating).  There should be nothing in G anime that could possibly offend anyone.
PG	PG shall describe anime that is for all ages in Japan, but may not be taken well by a few Americans.  Such anime may contain cartoon violence, completely non-sexual nudity (i.e. Ranma ½ contains some scenes with nudity that isn’t inappropriate to show on normal broadcast TV), and may have a rare amount of profanity (say one mildly offensive word per episode).  Most PG anime will be light-hearted, however more complex than G anime.  Should be minimal content that could offend anyone (much less offensive than American PG-13 movies).
PG 13	PG-13 anime shall be anime for more mature audiences in Japan, dealing with sophisticated and sometimes sensitive subject matter including war, social issues, and religion.  It may also contain realistic violence and animated fight scenes that may contain blood.  It may also contain moderate profanity in the subtitles.  It could describe comedies geared toward a teenage audience, involving jokes with mild sexual references.  Nudity is more common than PG anime, however still not sexual in nature.  PG-13 may be mildly controversial, because like any art form, it’s designed to provoke thought, which naturally sparks some controversy.
R	R shall apply to anime that is clearly not for young children, however may still be appropriate for many teenagers.  R anime is generally aimed toward adults and contains mature themes that may include sexual scenes, however does not have to.  There may also be excessive blood and gore.  This anime should be considered seriously, as it is comparable to movies that are like the American film “The Silence of the Lambs.”  This does not include any form of animated pornography.  R rated anime will only be shown if the film is excellent or related to a class topic (i.e. the Cyberpunk unit of Approaching the Arts).  This anime is likely to be controversial due to thought-provoking, mature themes and subject matter.
